Cancer New Moon Mudra: Mira — a practice for inner wisdom, nurturing balance, and cycles of care
Welcome to the Cancer New Moon:
The Cancer New Moon invites you to come home to yourself. To slow down. To soften. To listen to the wisdom that lives inside your intuition and your emotions. This watery lunation reminds you that going inward and opening outward are both valid, that nurturing yourself and caring for others are not opposites but parts of the natural balance of giving and receiving. Rooted in inner wisdom, it invites you to set gentle boundaries that make space for emotional renewal and deeper connection. It calls you to tend to your inner child, to offer yourself the same safety, softness, and love you so naturally share with everyone else. Let this moon remind you that your cycles are sacred, and that rest, reflection, and care are not detours. They are the pathway to your healing.
Our featured Mira Mudra embodies this tender Cancerian energy, a hand shape for ease, emotional fluidity, and nurturing. As your fingers join below your navel, it invites you to soften, to let your emotions move freely, and to return to your own care. If you would like to work more intentionally with this lunar energy, you could pair this practice with the reflections and embodiment practices in the Cancer New Moon Embodied Workbook.
And if you would like to move through the lunar cycles in community, our memberships are here to hold you, with live classes, recorded practices, new and full moon workbooks, and an ever-growing library of supportive tools. Check out ways to practice mudras and more with our empowering yoga community on our live class schedule.
Above all, Katrina Marie Yoga is a space to practice, reflect, and remember that your inner wisdom is trustworthy. Your need for rest is holy. Caring for yourself is not selfish, it is the source of everything you are able to give. You are allowed to nurture yourself as deeply as you nurture everyone else.
So take what you need and leave what you don't. Perhaps for now, begin by aligning with the energy of the Cancer New Moon through the following mudra and the tools that accompany it.
🫶🏻 Practice Mira Mudra:
WHEN:
Around the Cancer New Moon, when the sun and moon align in Cancer's watery energy of inner wisdom, nurturing balance, and cycles of care.
WHY:
This moon asks you to turn gently inward and tend to yourself the way you so naturally tend to everyone else. Mira Mudra meets you there. It supports ease, emotional fluidity, and nurturing, helping you soften your grip and let your emotions move like the tides. If this shape does not feel resonant in your body, you are welcome to trade it for any hand position that supports you. Your body's wisdom always comes first.
BENEFITS:
encourages ease
supports emotional fluidity
invites nurturing
connects to the water element
supports your Sacral (Svadhisthana) Chakra
HOW:
Find a comfortable seat with both sit bones anchored.
Join the tips of your thumbs to the tips of your pinky fingers on each hand.
Bring these joined fingers to meet.
Connect the tips of your ring fingers to each other.
Extend your index and middle fingers. Rest this below your navel comfortably.
Soften your shoulders and align your spine.
BREATHE:
After sitting with Mira Mudra for a few moments, begin the Moon Connection Breath — a breath practice to encourage a calm mind and a connection to the moon and your intuition. Cancer somatically rules your chest. As you practice this, let your shoulders soften and your chest open, breathing space into your heart.
Find any comfortable seated place with your sit bones anchored into the Earth or support.
Let your left hand rest at ease wherever is comfortable, perhaps on your heart.
Use your right hand in whatever way feels natural to block your right nostril near the cartilage.
Inhale slowly and deeply through your left nostril, then pause briefly.
Exhale slowly and fully through your mouth.
Continue for 3 to 5 minutes, letting each breath deepen your connection to the moon and your own intuition.
When you are ready, release control of your breath after an exhale, return to Mira Mudra, and pause to feel, listen, and open.
MANTRA:
Repeat silently or out loud as you hold the mudra, allowing the words to settle into your body and guide your intention for this new moon:
I listen to my inner wisdom to guide me on when to go inward and when to open up.
I nourish myself as deeply as I nourish others.
I trust the cycles that shape my healing and my life.
EMBODY YOUR INTENTION:
After a final exhale, release the mudra and let your hands rest wherever they feel most natural. Take a moment to notice what has shifted, even just a little.
What cycles do you need to align with to feel the way you want to feel?
Where in your life are you ready to receive as fully as you give?
What is one nurturing act of care you can offer yourself as an intention for this lunar cycle?
Let your body answer.
Let your breath guide you.
Let your inner wisdom and gentle care illuminate your next step.
When you feel ready, perhaps write your intention down to help bring it into reality. May it support you as you slow down, soften, and come home to yourself.
May this Cancer New Moon support you in trusting your inner wisdom, nurturing yourself as deeply as you nurture others, and honoring every cycle that shapes your healing.
